Bourbon N’ Toulouse

First let me start off by saying the food is great, go get some! I’ve never gone to Bourbon N’ Toulouse and ordered something I didn’t like. If they do anything better than another it is layering complex flavors. You know how you will go to a restaurant and no matter what you order everything tastes similar?  Well not here! The gumbo is as different as chocolate and onions to the chicken etouffee. By far one of my favorite places to grub down and I always feel satisfied!

So today I chose a half and half Black Beans with Caramelized Corn and Cajun Red Chili. It was a cool rainy day and some hot comfort food was just what this foodie needed! As usual, the food is very consistent from batch to batch so I knew exactly what to expect. Both were served over a bed of white rice and a side of their “crack”  Cajun Garlic bread. Basically, it is a french baguette with a sweet-butter spiced up with Cajun seasonings and MAN is it great! The Black Beans with caramelized corn was fantastic!  Just the right amount of sweet and just the right amount of heat! The dish is finished off with some red bell peppers and a cream sauce to tie it all together!

The other half of the meal was the Cajun Red Chili. This is a typical bean-less chili with a heavy tomato base. I like to sprinkle some raw diced onion on top and shake a few splashes of Cajun Power Garlic Sauce on top. It goes great with the bread and sits nicely as it warms up the belly!

My lovely wife ended up with Tami’s Thai Peanut Sauce. She loves this dish with the baby corn, red peppers and a cream sauce that really comes alive in the mouth!

Located in the heart of Chevy Chase Neighborhood in Lexington, Bourbon N’ Toulouse proprietors Will Pieratt and Kevin Heathcoat are the foundation of this eclectic creole joint. I’m always greeted with a hearty welcome when I walk though the doors. Will and Kevin don’t know me, we aren’t friends, they don’t know my kids names, or even what car I drive….but they sure act like they do! Today we struck up a conversation about the bottles of Cajun Power Sauces they have for sale on the shelf behind the counter. I said I LOVE the traditional Cajun Power Garlic Sauce which they offer in abundance as a topping for their meals (as if it even needed it) and we chatted about the Spicy Garlic Pepper Sauce, the Worcestershire Sauce, and the Louisiana Lightning Strike.   I stepped up only one notch and chose the Spicy Garlic Pepper Sauce which had only a slightly more twang than the original.

If there is that one “oddity” joint you want to take out-of-town visitors, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do yourself a favor and take them to Bourbon N’ Toulouse! You will be the host with the most and I GAR-ON-TEE it will be a memorable time!

    Brian,

Four of us were heading to Lexington for a Keb’ Mo’ concert and musing about dinner. We found your review of Bourbon N’ Toulouse. We were sold; we were not disappointed. Food was great, we had 5 different menu items (crawfish etoufee, white chili w/ chicken, creole chicken, Tami Thai, and Black Beans and Carmalized Corn), We passed the plates around and as you pointed out, each had distinct tastes. More importantly, each had rich flavors that were well balanced.

The service was friendly and quick. The atmosphere was fun and it felt very local (honest, real).

    We loved it!

Thank you for your review that led us to this fun meal and experience.
