Gumbo Ya Ya – Yatwich

August 30, 2011 by: Brian

Sunday evening was a visit to one of the few Cajun restaurants in Lexington, Gumbo Ya Ya.  We were in the mood for some comfort food and have lately been on a cajun kick, so when driving by this shopping center on South Broadway, we pulled in and made our order.  I normally order a healthy portion of the jambalya, but the last few times here the sausage and chicken have been getting more slim.  So this time I opted for the signature sandwich, the Yatwich!  I didn’t want to have just a sandwich for dinner so I ordered the Yatwich as a half and got a half order of Gumbo.  Gotta say the Gumbo was delicious!  I prefer a little lighter roux in my gumbo and this one fit the bill.  It was served over white rice and a few splashes of hot sauce set it off nicely.

I can’t say for sure the Yatwich was exceptional because they were out of the signature bread for the sandwich.  I was able to get it on the regular garlic bread, but somehow I think I was missing a major component of the dish.  Never-the-less, Gumbo Ya Ya did a good job of creating a unique dish tat is part pulled chicken, part gumbo, and all tasty!  There was just enough heat to give it some attitude but not enough to make it unbearable.  Ale8 on tab was also available and I drank my fill as well!

Not necessarily a choice of mine, the wife always goes for the Maque Choux (“A cheesey, prociutto cream sauce with crawfish, roasted red bell peppers, and corn.” – www.gumboyayaky.com)  It’s the only place in town to get this variety and she really goes for it.

For the limited amount of cajun joints in this town, this is a good alternative when you can’t get spend the several hours stewing up your own.
